Literacy means multiple things to me. I look back a couple of centuries and realize the journey that my culture has taken when it comes to being literate. Until 1865, when slavery was completely abolished, African Americans were killed for knowing how to read and write. While it seems to be something so small to the current generation, being able to be literate is somewhat of a big deal to me. It helps me cherish the education I am receiving.
Now in the 21st century, literacy has become broader and more popular compared to 1865. . It has a lot more aspects to consider. In past generations, literacy was simply reading and writing. But for the present generation, if you only know how to read and write you are more illiterate than literate. Literacy involves a lot more than a pencil and paper now.
Being a part of this generation, it is fundamental to be computer literate. Everything involves a computer of some sort. In the future, I imagine that every job will require you to know how to fully work a computer. So while being here and now with all the opportunities because of new technology, it could also be detrimental if you do not keep up with new technology.

Dear Blogger,
ReplyDeleteI loved your ideas of defining different ideas/explanations of literacy. I never really looked at it like that. Its interesting to see how different the rates of literacy look when you look at literacy itself differently.
